PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
Display Backplanes
Introduction of organic AMOLED applications is most likely to occur in low-cost, short-lived disposable applications. The first applications of the VOFET will likely be in products with lower display
resolution and performance that are manufactured using printing and evaporative fabrication techniques. ORFID's transistors and OLEDs are laminated to one another directly to overcome the cost and yield penalties of silicon-based devices and eliminate some vias and/or interconnects that would be required by traditional OFETs.
RFID Tags
ORFID has an on going program to develop VOFET-based RFID transponders. There is currently a commercial demand for printable, low cost and disposable RFID tags High volume users, such as
Walmart's top 100 suppliers, ship products directly from their factories to distribution centers, and from the distribution centers to Walmart stores. There is little to no warehousing of goods. Cartons are unpacked
shortly after arrival at the store. In this scheme, tagged items (that are currently bar coded) would be read at each transfer. The total number of reads would be as little as five times during the lifetime of the
RFID tag. The total life of the carton is roughly one week. An organic tag could be useful with a shelf life greater than a month and an operating capability that exceeds a dozen reads.
